STL and Søstrene Grene power up Logistics – new robot warehouse in the Netherlands and another on the way in Aarhus

Automation and ambitious growth go hand in hand at Søstrene Grene. Together with STL, the retail chain has just completed a major automation project in their new European distribution center in the Netherlands – and now the next step is being prepared: an automated setup in Aarhus, scheduled to be operational in 2026.

With stores in 17 markets, Søstrene Grene is one of Denmark’s strongest retail chains – and the demands on logistics increase alongside the chain’s European expansion. For Claus Tjærby, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Søstrene Grene, there has been a clear need to future-proof the warehouses.

"We saw a need to automate our warehouse systems, primarily to handle a changing product range and increasing volumes – something that would otherwise require extensive development of our logistics setup. That made STL the right match for us," says Claus Tjærby.

Robots create scalability and stability
The recently completed warehouse in the Netherlands is built around Geek+’s advanced AMR technology (Autonomous Mobile Robots) and is tailored to handle large seasonal fluctuations, complex B2C orders, and a dynamic product range. The warehouse is both scalable and reliable, designed to deliver high efficiency without compromising flexibility.

"We are incredibly proud to collaborate with such a prominent Danish retail chain as Søstrene Grene. The project in the Netherlands has been both ambitious and meaningful – and the completed setup is a strong example of how automation can future-proof logistics," says Ole Madsen, CEO of STL.

In Aarhus, preparations are already underway for the next phase: a similar automated setup in Søstrene Grene’s existing buildings, planned for commissioning in 2026.

Breakthrough in Denmark and New Offices in the Nordics
The collaboration with Søstrene Grene is just one of several high-profile automation projects STL has carried out in 2025. The Danish company has made significant inroads in the domestic market, where multiple industries have taken notice of its PopPick robot systems and AMR solutions.

Among other developments:

  • Textile Logistics A/S in Ikast has chosen STL as its automation partner
  • A major catering company in Sorø has implemented floor robots
  • Med24 has doubled its number of robots and upgraded to new premises

Additionally, STL has just closed a historically large order in the Nordic market – a comprehensive AMR solution for one of Denmark’s largest grocery chains.

With rising demand, STL has also significantly expanded its organization in 2025, opening new offices in Hadsund, Hårup, Gothenburg, and Pierensee. On October 1, STL will open an office in Oslo – a new location that will serve the Norwegian market with flexible automation solutions for industry, retail, and logistics.
